Chicago's Lonnie Owens put the wraps on a fine campaign today by winning the 2014 Western League The Hitman.
He scorched the opposition with a .369 average, picking up 239 hits, 28 doubles, 6 triples, 44 home runs and 151 RBIs, while scoring 130 runs, in what many would say has been one of the better seasons of the veteran's career. |
 | Saturday, October 11th, 2014: Injury Forces Del Fox Out
Chicago fans will be disappointed to learn that Del Fox developed a strained bicep muscle while throwing a pitch in today's game. After the doctor informed the Chicago Grizzlies manager that Fox was expected to miss 5 weeks, the manager told the press that the rest of the team would have to step up their play until the closer could return. "You can't make excuses in baseball, because there's always a game tomorrow," said the team's skipper.
This season Fox has earned 37 saves, made 52 relief appearances, fanned 39 hitters in 50.2 innings and posted an ERA of 3.55 and a 5-5 record.

 | Tuesday, October 7th, 2014: Portland Dazed, Hays Gets No-Hitter
The crowd sensed something special today at Bill Veeck Park. They seemed to get a little louder with passing of each out and each inning. It was obvious on the scoreboard that the pitcher had a no-hitter.
"It was like the playoffs or the World Series," Devin Hays told the press after the game."
It ended up a very special day for Hays of the Chicago Grizzlies -- he held the Portland Beavers hitless and beat them 2-1, totaling 3 strikeouts with no walks and faced only 30 batters.
"Today was my day and I got lucky. I've had a couple of other shots that I've lost in the seventh inning and today I got through that and made it."
Lucky? Maybe so. But it usually takes more than luck to hold a team hitless.
This year Hays has compiled a 18-6 record with a 3.85 ERA.
